SANTA FE, N.M. — “Our house is a very, very, very fine house … with two cats in the yard … life used to be so hard; now everything is easy ’cause of you, and our house.”
– Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Your space. Your place. Your refuge. It should be a wonderful place to be! Essential to one’s wellbeing. Interior designers specialize in making your house, your house, if you can’t or don’t want to.
But sort of like finding “the right therapist,” how do you find “the right” interior designer?
One good way might be the one-stop shopping method … go to the annual Show House Santa Fe, which, for 2016, was held over two weekends earlier this month, observe and experience each designer’s style and interact with them, see who you like!
Each of 30 interior designers decorated one room in a splendid private home, displaying his or her talent and taste. Do you like lots of plump, cheerful cushions perking up your bancos? It’s Mr. French in the small sunroom. Dove grey faux finish plaster walls – Jennifer Ashton is your girl. And artist superlativa Carol Anthony did a dream studio upstairs that makes you yearn to sit on that stool and pick up the brush. It overlooks the living room where Reside Home painted a surprise patchwork colored wall, just for fun!
The first Friday evening is a splashy, dramatic opening night benefit with excessive food and drink, and great entertainment. This year’s house (and party) both followed a Mexican theme, so you designed your own tacos, margaritas flowed and Nacha Mendez sang her fabulous music under a starry autumn sky for the 700 guests.
The evening generated $55,000 to benefit Dollars4Schools, the worthy nonprofit educational program that gives 100 percent of your funds directly to the school teachers (no middleman bureaucracy) and the teachers can spend it on their Wish Lists, as you designate. You go to the website and pick out the program(s) you’d like to sponsor, donate your money and Dollars4Schools passes every cent directly to Mr. or Mrs. Teacher – for science experiment projects, field trips, art supplies (the district doesn’t pay for such things anymore!) and exciting, worthwhile, hands-on learning in math and English.
Can you fathom that over 50 percent of the students graduating from high school in Santa Fe need remedial English? How does this happen? “Literacy is the cornerstone of success”; hence, half our teens are headed for failure? No wonder we’re always at the bleak 49th or 50th in the education rankings in America. The programs of Dollars4Schools are taking action to change that!
